Hey guys, i ordered a new customised PC but i bought 8gb ram with it. It seems to be the one with 'Dual rank' I was looking around for another 4GB ram to add to it. Which would make it 12gb Ram in total. But the 4 gb ones seem to be single rank. Would it be a problem using 8gb dual rank and 4gb single rank RAM together? DDR4 btw :)

Thank you

Just to stress the point, even mixing and matching 2 exact same kits may not work. You are better off selling what you have and buying 2x8gb. Also with 3 sticks installed your RAM cannot run in dual channel mode, you want 2 or 4 sticks otherwise you sacrifice performance.

I have 2 same sets of 2x4gb Corsair Vengencer DDR3 1600mhz CL9, I tried running both in 1 pc and it caused stability problems, I got the pc to boot by slackening the timings and over volting but still had occasional problems.

Technically, you can, however, there is no guarantee it will run and run nicely. It is highly recommended to buy RAM in a kit rather than mix and matching. And if you mix and match, try to get the exact same modules that are in your computer all ready.

I have a Dell 5567 laptop which came with a single stick of ram,16 gb dual channel and ranked installed, a friend of mine told me it would have better performance in dual channel mode. I ordered a 8 gb kit with the same specs as the one.( I only installed one new one) I installed cpu-z app and checked , the original stick came up as dual rank, the new one as single. Everything working fine! Now I have 20 gb ram!
