Just had this thought.

is it possible that the GPU makers Just put the GDDR5 on Dimm slots so people can add more VRAM to their GPU ?

Like if some one buys 3GB Version of GTX 1060 then decides to add 3 More to reach 6 ?

or maybe more ?

Or the GTX 1080 Ti could be upgraded to 24GB of VRAM by adding memory ?

Actually back in the day the ATI 3D Rage II had just that an upgradeable slot where you could double the RAM. In fact I did such an upgrade to my card at the time.

That said today's cards this is not possible the memory is integrated into the board to keep it close to the GPU, and to have it cooled by the cooler because its clocked so high. The logistics of making the memory upgrade-able on a board would be insane, and just not worth the engineering behind it.

because everything is soldered down, and not designed to be tampered with by laymen

even if you frankensteined it you would need to re engineer the card to access the extra memory opening all kinds of pandora's boxes

eh , it is the same like the System memory can be made into slots .. not a big deal.

no it is not, motherboards have pre-installed sockets for extra ram and the bios to support it

XD of course you are free to fly close to the sun prometheus

card can be made with pre installed sockets as well. and their bios can be made to support this too.

you might get lucky with a card having a shared PCB design with the higher memory version

YOU would need to frankenstein it, unlike system memory

not guaranteed to work, so again we are right back to
