So today i upgraded my processor to an i7 7700k 7th gen. I covered the entire surface area of the new CPU with a decent amount of evenly applied arctic silver 5 thermal paste. I am wondering what the average temperatures of this CPU is when gaming? Currently based off of corsair link 4, i am getting anywhere from 60-75 degrees while gaming and around 30-40 while in idle or web browsing. my cooler is a corsair h80iv2 and i have an asus gtx 1080 strix gaming gpu. any help is appreciated

Nope. At stock values (ambient in low-mid 20s °C) you should be running low 30s at idle and mid 50s to mid 60s at worst with gaming loads.
2 issues I see right off the bat, 1st you can do nothing about, you chose AS5 as thermal paste, which is very mediocre paste and equitable if not worse than the stock Corsair pre-applied paste.
Second is you don't want a liberal amount of paste. Thinner the better. It just has to barely be able to cover most of the lid.

Hello, the temperatures you get on that are not out of the ordinary. 30 is the average temp I've seen while idle, and 70-80 while gaming also seems common. You still have some room before dangerous levels of heat

So AS5 was just what was recommended to me at my local computer store. They said it was good quality but either way for future reference what brand would you recommend? I also took the cooler off of the CPU, removed all the paste and reapplied half as much and i seem to be getting much better temps.

For a thermal paste I recommend:

But if you want a different brand you can look at this table made by der8auer

When it comes to thermal paste less is more to be honest. Most ppl like the "rice grain" dot in the middle.
I myself like the apply an very thin layer across the whole IHS. The layer then is so thin that I can almost read the letters printed on top.

This guy is right about thermal paste, but I still don't think your temps are that far off.

I personally prefer Noctua or gelid extreme, both are very easy to apply and get right, they spread extremely easily.
The only reason AS5 is so widespread is because years ago, when temps really started to become an issue, and ppl were starting to look towards better cpu coolers, paste was extremely expensive and hard to get. Arctic took advantage of that and sold a good sized tube really cheap. It took off like crazy, cuz now you could easily fix your cooler issues. It wasn't until later other companies followed suit, but the damage was done, AS5 was the brand everyone knew about. Still happens today, parents and other grown-ups who built pc's back then pass along their wisdom, they always used AS5.
