GTX 1070Ti vs GTX 1080

I've seen there is a new GPU coming from NVIDIA, the GTX 1070Ti.

In terms of GPU's I'm not the most knowledgeable guy, but the upcoming GTX 1070Ti is 579 euros (674USD) and the GTX 1080 is 629 euros (732USD).

In terms of overall performance, and if you compare price and quality, which one would be the best buy?

The conclusions are pretty easy to make, so I don't see why not.

GTX1080 2560 shaders 8GB of GDDR5X ~10,000Mhz (Effective)
GTX1070 Ti 2432 shaders 8GB of GDDR5 ~8000Mhz (Effective)

All GTX1070Ti will ship with an underwhelming base and boost clock. If you can overclock most of them to the same frequencies as the 1080, then you will have roughly 90% of the performance or more of a GTX1080. Really the biggest difference is the memory speed. I doubt you'll be able to clock the memory as high, but I've seen people get pretty impressive numbers out of GTX1070.

Despite what others are saying, I think this is a case of over production by Nvidia. So many of their chips were good enough to be GTX1080 and GTX1080 (Mobile) that it took...

This is a difficult question to answer, as there are no performance reviews out yet. The 1070Ti is assumed for the most part to have performance close to the 1080, but until actual benchmarks are run, it's impossible to make that determination for certain.

Ah fair enough, well I saw the ''specs'' if you will, are out already so I thought people would jump to conclusions from there

Despite what others are saying, I think this is a case of over production by Nvidia. So many of their chips were good enough to be GTX1080 and GTX1080 (Mobile) that it took them a long time to build up a stock of chips with only a single bad SM unit. I assume in nearly twoish years they've been making GP104 that they've increased yields even further.

The GTX1070 with 15 SM units and the GTX1070 mobile with 16 SM units is also interesting. They produce those in pretty heavy volumes as well so they might have been cutting down anything with less then 19 SM units to make them.

^+1 memory bandwidth should be the only major difference between them. It's actually great than Eximo makes out, as I believe most GTX 1080s are now shipping with the updated 11 GT/s GDDR5X.
I think I remember seeing benchmarks showing that Pascal wasn't particularly VRAM-bound, so the bandwidth deficiency may not end up making a huge difference. But it's hard to say without benchmarks.

Both are still readily available, and the 11 GT/s cards are priced a little higher. Mostly the fancier cards as well.

Even most 'older' GTX1080 can also run the memory at nearly 10,500 Mhz. I've not been paying much attention to GTX1080Ti numbers, so I am not sure how far the 11 GT/s stuff will go. Though I agree, I don't think bandwidth has been a problem for any of the Nvidia flagship cards for a while. Mostly running into CPU bottlenecks I think.

All in all, an interesting? product. Not sure it needed to exist. Not that much cheaper, and people paying that much for a GPU, well, not sure they would make a big distinction. Just that much closer to convincing yourself to get the next step up.

If you are choosing between the 1070Ti and the 1080, choose the 1080 Ti :)
