Hey. Im upgrading from i7 7700 HD graphics to a dedicated graphics card. Right now im in the used market. Sli wont be an option for me because i have a h110 micro atx board. However, my power supply is fair- 750w cooler master gx series so i can handle cards that may take a bit more power. I have around £160 and a £70 cex voucher, but nothing is good on cex! I could sell it for around £60. This is the pricing of my options:

GTX 1060 3gb- £135
GTX 1060 6gb- £195
RX 480 8g- £255 at cex
RX 480 4g- £240 at cex
GTX 980- £170
GTX 980 Ti- £250
RX 580 8g- £230 new
GTX 970- £125

My dilemma is this:

I have shown interest in the 1060 3gb already, so it will be arkward to just do a runner. However, after watching videos on YouTube, ive found that 3gb of vram can be an issue at times, and certainly wont be as future proof as a 6gb card. However, a part of me doesnt want to pay a 40-50% premium for a 10% performance difference in most titles. However, the 1060 3gb is a single fan evga one, and the 1060 6gb is a dual fan palit one. The middle road is the gtx 980 dual fan for £170 which also seems a bit expensive or i could sacrifice a tiny bit on the speed of the card and go for a gtx 970, which has 3.5+0.5gb of vram.

What should i do?

Solution
There is more than a simple vram difference between a GTX10603gb and the 6gb variant.
The 6gb unit also has more CUDA cores which makes it stronger.

The vram on a card will be appropriate to the card.
And... vram is used differently by amd and nvidia drivers.
Deciding on specs is not usually productive.

Similarly, the cooling solutions on cards are appropriate.
Card vendors know that fancy coolers sell, so they supply them, but they really do not make all that much difference in performance.

You might use tom's gpu hierarchy table to figure how the cards rank.

one tier difference means little.
