Which laptop specifically? What OS?

Can you bypass the message and boot successfully? Or is that all you're presented with?

Could be a failing drive, or a corrupt OS.... too little info to know at this point.

Ok. Have Acer asper aspire v5-471, did the f2 thing, changed multiple settings, big fat zero, this message occurred out of the blue, essentially, was in gmail, computer shut off, then auto repair message then this? Didn't drop lap top, did zero.

Sounds like the HDD is failing to me.

You could create installation media and try a full-blown "recovery", but I would only expect to do that to give you a chance to recover any data you can't afford to lose.

It's impossible to say it's the HDD definitively, without being able to run a health check...... but in it's current state, you can't do that either.

I believe the laptop is from c.2012? So you have an HDD (probably a 5400rpm) that's been dealing with the day-to-day movements, vibrations, (slight) drops etc - so it wouldn't be surprising for the drive to be failing.

Assuming you're using Windows 10, you can create installation media (on another computer) here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Once you create and boot from it, there will be the option to "recover". No guarantee it'll work, but it's worth a shop if there's any data you need to save.
