Something in my PC smells like it is burning =(

When using the computer normally, nothing seems strange.

However when gaming, the machine starts to smell of burning after about 15-20 mins. One time I had ignored this, and the computer suddenly shut off without any warning.

My problem is, I can't identify where the smell comes from. Someone suggested the PSU - but the smell would be coming from inside of the PSU enclosure, and not from somewhere else inside the case.

I also downloaded some monitoring tools (SpeedFan 4.52) to see if the temperatures were too high somewhere - but to be completely honest I don't know how to read it. The GPU reads 54C (with a flame icon next to it) while in normal use (not gaming) but people have said GPU's commonly run above 75C (or even higher) during heavy use. There are 8 "Fan speeds" listed, 4 are zero, Fan1 says "17 RPM" (Not even spinning? That cannot be right, can it? All 3 of my fans spin.)

Obviously I want to avoid doing something that will make my computer inoperable... But solving the problem requires first identifying it.

Solution

Yes, exactly.
See the label. It has 2x 12V rails 18A each. (18+18)*12=432W
432W is nowhere near 600W - that's what I'm saying.

Yes, but the burning smell doesn't come from the PSU - it comes from somewhere else in the case. Either that, or whatever is causing the smell is somehow 'throwing the scent' somewhere else.

How would I be able to check the PSU to identify it as the problem (or rule it out)?

Screenshot of graphs during normal use: http://prntscr.com/h4qtj3

Graphs after 10 minutes of gameplay: http://prntscr.com/h4qzrq
NOTE: NO BURNING SMELL. Strange...

...and after another 15 minutes of gameplay: http://prntscr.com/h4r77b
Again, no burning smell.

I think I have a suspicion... It doesn't happen when playing the game in general, only when using specific (newly released) content within the game. The gameplay above did not include any of the specific content.

EDIT: Oh, you wanted the PSU name/model... It's a CoolerMaster 600-watt PSU, Product number RS-600-PCAR-E3

I don't see anything troubling in those screenshots.
Only thing weird - cpu temperature @idle is 13C ? That doesn't seem realistic. Probably wrong sensor readings.
Your PSU is more like 450W (not 600W), but anyway - should have no problem providing necessary power to your system.

Maybe record sensor readings while playing that newly released content?

Temperature: The sensor doesn't read CPU, it reads CPU1 (the first core). However there is no temp reading for CPU, so I figure there's no real difference.

PSU wattage: Strange... Looking up the model number online says it is a 600-watt. Maybe what you're saying is, it puts out less wattage than it is rated for?

New sensor readings: I plan on doing that later this afternoon - but I worry about killing the machine if I push it too far... That may be what the safety shutoff mechanism is for, but it's really more of a fail-safe.
