Ok I know it's not directly the Vive's fault but here's what's going on in bullet points:

1. Repurposed an old video editing machine for Vive:
- Dual Quad-Core Xeon 5410
- Supermicro X7DAL Mobo
- 16GB FBDIMM
- 750 Antec PSU
- Bought an 1080 MSI Armor
- SSD
- Machine up since ~2010

Playing Vive
2. Ran the Vive test - said PC was "Far Beyond" minimum requirements.
3. Played games for basically 3 days straight, no issues on high settings (Assetto Corsa, Onward)
4. On the fourth day, woke up to a slight burning smell in the house. (computer was off) turned on computer and Windows would not boot, flashes white screen, black screen, can see mouse, but not much else.
5. Attempted to recover / repair to no avail. Cannot go into any version of safe mode. Plugged in old Video Card, same effect. No onboard video AFAIK.

First Clean Install
6. Clean install windows, steam, video drivers, no chipset drivers available for windows 10 (read that 10 does it by itself), installed vive
7. Booted up Onward, played for maybe 20 minutes before FPS hang
8. Computer goes to white screen during game, black screen, windows goes into "Attempting to Recover".

9. Pulled SSD, tested with laptop, no issues.
10. Ran memtest86, pulled all but 4GB ram, ran 1 pass, came out clean

Second Clean Install
11.Clean install windows, steam, video drivers. Computer seemed totally fine with no load, chrome, youtube, etc etc. Got a few DLL missing errors.
12. Confirmed BIOS up to date
13. Created both a system image, as well as a recovery point
14. Ran a bunch of different PSU calculators to confirm my setup and all suggested I need 650W. I have 750.
14. Restarted windows after windows update, does not boot into windows, goes into "attempting to recover" and "diagnosing your pc" then restart. Unable to recover with image or restore point in Troubleshooting mode WTF.

Thoughts
1. Memory tested fine
2. Fans all working
3. Speedfan suggest temps right
4. SSD checks out fine
5. Will change out PSU tonight however, and the CMOS battery and visually check for burns. The crash following the second clean install was not under heavy load which makes me want to rule out the PSU.
6. Am I experiencing Mobo failure? The 1080 is a PCI 3.0 x16 while the MOBO is PCI 1.0 x16. However, my understanding is that the theoretical bandwidth of the PCI 1.0 x16 of ~4000 MB /Second is not being exceeded. The crashes definitely started after the gaming, but I hope it is a part I can replace, rather than the MOBO.

I already bought everything I need to build a new computer, but honestly I like the current setup I have and am a little stubborn and really want to fix it. The steam test also puts me at "far beyond minimum requirements" for the current setup. What do I do??

Well, a couple of things seemed to do the trick:

- PSU swap to an EVGA 80+
- I put memory back onto the MOBO wrong after my first set of Memtest 86, so put it in correctly this time, with matched pairs
- Since putting in the GPU, I had the GPU on the PCIx 4 slot, and I moved it to the 16 slot.

Returning all the new bits and bobs...
