Bought a new SATA DVD drive. After a bit of a struggle i see XP no recognizes drive unless the 3.3 vdc is connected. No biggie but why so many SATA use just the 5 & 12 less the 3.3 ? And why the XP no see unless the 3.3 connected ?

Read my question ! I see that XP needs the 3.3 to recognize drive. I have not tried on '7' but I will. Simply saying if you use the 4 pin Molex to power the DVD drifve XP will not see. As soon as I connect the 3.3 (fifth wire - orange) XP sees.

I did read your question.

What do you mean, you connect the fifth wire? It's just hanging there loose? And you push it in?
Does your dvd drive have a molex or SATA power connector?
Many dvd drives dont need the 3.3v beacuse they are designed not to need it.
