Time to upgrade an I7 920

I've checked around a bit on the forum, but do need some help on this topic now that Black Friday/Cyber Monday are around the corner :

Here is what I have :
Thermaltake G21 Tempered Glass Case
2 140 mm fans intake
1 120 mm fan exhaust
I7 920 CPU
MSI R9 280 2GB GPU
Noctua NHL12 Low profile cooler (2 fans)
PNY 1 TB SSD
5400 rpm i TB HD
EVGA 650 W PSU Gold

Games I play are Star Wars Battlefront, COD and BF1, all of whom have new games coming out this month or so.

What I am noticing is that my CPU is running at 100% during gaming, and in BF1 it takes forever to join a game (spins around, and finally joining, game has already started). FPS can go from 60 n- 200 at idle to 40 ish in game. I usually ude the medium settings.

Temps are fine, ranging from 37C at idle, to 70ish in heavy duty gaming.

Being in Canada, prices are kinda expensive, so could use some guidance from the community.

I do want to upgrade the MB, CPU and if I have to, the GPU.

It may be time to upgrade however the slow times getting into a match can be fixed with putting the game onto the SSD.

^^I second the above. Go with an 8-series i5 over a 7 or even 8 series i7 and save that money. I would look into getting a GTX 1070 over the 6Gb 1060 with that saved money if you want future proofing. Even at 1080p, some games struggle to maintain 60+ FPS with a 6Gb 1060.

Long join times is disc IO. Upgrade of storage as suggested will fix this.

Think how far you want to go:
IF you want to have CHEAPER upgrade think about staying with 3'rd gen RAM, buy 4'th gen used MBO + i7 4790k
This will be cheaper and you can buy some GPU. Think about 1050 TI, 1060 6GB or 1070TI depending on budget.

you definitely don't want 7'th gen, if possible jump 4'th gen to keep ram or 8'th gen for more cores.

I noticed afterwards that the OP does have a large enough SSD to put that game on. And I agree with 4th gen if you can find one for cheap.

Well as a Haswell chipset owner myself with an i5 4690K, I thought about upgrading to an i7 earlier this year as I got more into video editing/rendering. I found out that their prices, even new and OEM, were still outrageous (https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-4790K-Processor-Cache-BX80646I74790K/dp/B00KPRWAX8). I would never buy a used 4790K as you never know if it was abused in overclocking.

If he's going to upgrade, he needs to go 7th-gen Kaby Lake or 8th-gen Coffee Lake. It's why I decided to just upgrade my GPU and hold out for next year for Cannonlake (die shrink of Coffee Lake).

Many thanks, I do have a 1 TB SSD which is where the games are installed on, on a separate partition than the OS. It kinda seems the game is quick to start, however, joining a game (matchmaking, joining a server etc)seems to take forever. I'm guess could be the CPU as a bottleneck.

Would rather buy new vs used due to the not knowing factor mentioned before (how much abuse did it take)

I even looked into an i7 7700 stock vs i7 7700K (heard of temp issues) as I'm not likely to overclock as agree with 10tacle above. Coffee lake not an option now.

Wildcard, will look into the MSi card you mentioned vs the Zotac one. Am Prime with Amazon so that will help defray costs as well.

Buy a Ryzen 5 1600, with say an Asrock B350 pro4, and use the savings for a better GPU.
