One 2x8GB kit or two 1x8GB kits?

I know that the point of the kit is that the RAM has already been factory-tested to work well together, but would it be bad to get two sticks of the same RAM, except not in the same kit? The cheapest 2x8GB kit (2400MHz, CL15) is 140$ while two 1x8GB kits of the cheapest ram (with the same specs) would cost 110$ (30$ cheaper! :D)

You can get the separate sticks if you get it from a vendor who has a good return policy. Just because they have not been tested together does not mean they wont work. In reality, they probably will work together. But they may not, so if you decide to go the cheaper route, make sure you can return it just in case.

Always, always, always....a 2x or 4x kit instead of 2 individual sticks.

Its not about being factory tested. More to do with timing. A kit of two sticks are guaranteed to have similar timing, hence why they are put in pair, while the same may not be true for same RAM sold loose, outside of kit.
Having said that, more often than not they tend to work together fine. But nobody can tell you with certainty that it will work. More like trial and error. You can always test it first and then return it within the return period if it doesnt work.

A kit will work no problems outside of a DOA unit.
mixing ram is a gamble, do you feel lucky today?

I have had 2 identical sticks, make model everything the same. the serial numbers were in series (one after another) and they would not work together as a unit
