i7-6700k - Windows and CPU-Z only showing 2 Cores 4 Threads..?

Recently bought an i7-6700k as an upgrade to my i5-6500, and was pretty disappointed when I didn't get much of a performance boost. I downloaded CPU-Z to check everything was in order, however upon running a benchmark I was only getting 50% of the multi-thread speed reference of another i7-6700k. After poking around in Task Manager and msconfig as well as CPU-Z I found that - for whatever reason - Windows is only detecting 2 cores and 4 threads.

I have checked other similar threads but the solutions there do not work for me.

So far this is what I have tried and failed with:

  • I have tried selecting 'Normal Boot' in msconfig.
I have tried checking 'Number of Processors' - the max there is 4..?
I have tried unchecking 'Number of Processors'
I have tried enabling and disabling 'Enable HT' in BIOS

I have no idea what could be causing this, and really need help.

Solution
Go into the BIOS reset its settings, then whatever setting you've configured now, will have to be set up / reconfigured again

Then save the BIOS settings again then reboot / boot into Windows

Under most circumstances I wouldn't mess with msconfig, but thank you for the advice.

Do you mean reconfigure the BIOS settings or others?

P.S. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I have a bad habit of wanting 100% certainty

Okay, it's now fixed. Before doing what Paul NZ said, my friend recommended installing and running the Intel Processor Identification Utility, and that worked.

Still, many thanks to Paul for the quick replies and relevant suggestions, I hope this thread can help others solve the same issue.
