Hi,

My current build is:
GPU: GTX 1070 FE
CPU: FX 8350
RAM: 2 x 8 GB DDR3 1866 MHz
Motherboard: Asus m5a78l-m/usb3
PSU: CX 750 M

I was thinking about getting an i7 7700k and motherboard bundle from Amazon and keeping the rest as is for now. My budget is 500 GBP.

Would you even upgrade at this point? What would you do with that budget? What would you upgrade?

Thanks!

If i were you , i would have bought the i9 processor with x299 chipset motherboard. I know it's costlier, but it's the latest and will give you better performance. and also there is a scope for future processor upgrade , as you would have x299 chipset motherboard

If you are going to upgrade anything, you need a new CPU. But that will require a new platform upgrade

The 7700k is a great CPU. I own one and love it, but if I were buying one today I would only get it if it is a really good deal. The 8600k performs very similarly and should be cheaper than the 7700k. So I would look at the 8600k. But it has just been released and availability is limited, so the 8600k prices are high right now.

With that being said, as the 8th gen becomes more available, retailers will run some good sales on the 6700k/7700k CPUs. Black Friday may be a very good day to grab one of those CPUs, at least here in the states. So if you go for the 7700k, dont overpay.

Why buy an i9? For gaming Intel main stream beats the HEDT. Let alone the cost of a x299 system will be well over $500. The i9's are overpriced space heaters that only few power users can get the most out of. And people that can use those extra cores are going with threadripper.

Yeah unfortunately, an i9 is too expensive for me.

I should be able to use the same RAM I have on an intel motherboard too, right?

You wont be able to use the DDR3 RAM on your current system as the Intel CPUs use DDR4.

If you have some DDR4 RAM already, then yes, it should be compatible. But you would have to check the mother board to be sure. RAM compatibility is not that big of an issue with Intel, but with Ryzen it has had some problems.

The motherboards are not backwards compatible? For now I'm leaning more towards an i7 7700k as it's 70% more powerful than my FX 8350, but the Ryzen is about 50% more. With the i7 I get more power for my money based on research online.

No, the motherboards are not going to be compatible. Your current AM3 platform is dead. There is nothing you can do to improve it and nothing will be released that is compatible with it. You will need a whole new platform upgrade which will consist of CPU/RAM/Mobo. So it wont be cheap.

The 7700k was the quintessential gaming chip in the world until a week ago. Intel released the 8700k which has taken it's place. But availability is low which makes the pricing high. The truth is there is little difference between the 8700k and the 7700k in gaming. But if you are going to perform workstation type task or stream you games, then the 8700k will be beneficial.

As for AMD, the Ryzen chips are really good CPUs, but they are better at workstation type task. So if you are into content creation or streaming, then they make the most sense as their gaming performance is good, just not as good as intel's.

If you are just interested interested in gaming and want your system now. Then go for the 7700k. There should be some good sales from vendors coming soon due to the 8th gen release. I have a 7700k and it is awesome and will be a good chip for a good while.

Thanks for the advice!

I meant whether the new motherboard I buy for the i7 would be compatible with my current ram sticks. They should be.

I know if I get an i7 7700k I need to get a new motherboard too. I don't mind at that point because the i7 is significantly faster than my FX 8350 and I would not be upgrading for at least 5 years after that. If I remember correctly I bought the FX 8350 back in 2012. It still holds up pretty well though but I've been having stuttering in games which I think are due to the FX 8350 not being fast enough to load data during gameplay. Games would default to higher graphics settings because I have a GTX 1070 but I think the FX 8350 cannot keep up with those settings. I'm thinking an i7 7700k being 75% faster according to http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-vs-AMD-FX-8350/3647vs1489 would be able to.

The 8700 is too expensive for me.
