So ive had my pc for a couple years, and even then i watched an old build guide (oops) but im running an amd athlon x4 760k with 8gb ddr3, and an msi r7 250x gpu. I really only play csgo and im on a very tight teenage budget, im looking to upgrade the cpu and mobo and possibly find a used gpu on ebay, any suggestions for the cpu? dont have a set budget just as inexpensive as i can get away with and i can make it work

I would steer clear of R3. They perform somewhere around the level of a i5 sandbridge which I bought in 2011. No SMT. R5 as a minimum IMO. Also the way I see it 4C/8T has been around for so long. Get an R5 1600. First generation of consumer friendly 6C/12T CPU. Multithreading is everywhere and only getting more important.

Because they are designed to compare to I3... Ryzen 3 OC is on par or better than coffee lake I3-8100. Around I5 means Ryzen is better bang for the money.

Absolutely. I'm not denying Ryzen is a great product. All I'm saying is if your buying today get something that reflects the modern generation of hardware. In my eyes that starts with the R5 1600. If you just can't afford it then find an extra $20-30 over an R3 and get the R5 1400. 8 threads is a worthy upgrade.
