I’m purchasing a pc from someone on Craigslist hoping to get my feet in the water for Pc gaming and was wondering what component I should upgrade first that’ll give me better performance. Currently I can only afford one because I’m broke but here are the specs:
i5 2400 4 core 3.4 ghz
8gb ddr3 ram 1600mhz
850w semi modular power supply
500gb WD hard drive
GT 520 1gb gpu

How much are you spending on that? Honestly, it's not worth much more than ~$125 IMO.

The GT520 is useless for modern gaming. Replacing that with a GTX 1050 would be a huge step up and plenty capable for modern 1080p gaming.

I'd suggest a 1050TI, but I suspect the i5-2400 would hold it back in a lot of cases, so not really worth the extra outlay.

Adding an SSD for a boot drive would give you a much 'faster' all-round experience, but not going to improve gaming.
