So I just pre-ordered the Intel Core i5-8600K 3.6 GHz 6-Core LGA 1151 Processor for my son for his gaming computer that he had built. The only problem is his previous CPU was AMD and I guess this new one won't work with his motherboard. I'm computer illiterate and he knows some but not enough about all the tech stuff. What would be a good motherboard to get for this and then does everything need replaced too?!?!

The new Ryzen line is NOT bad.
Easily goes toe to toe with equally priced Intel CPU's.

But...you are building a whole system, not just concentrating on one CPU.

This probably needs a whole new everything.
At the very least, motherboard and RAM.
Then, what other things that might be replaced depends on exactly what you have now.

Put that i5 on hold.
That may or may not be what you need.

This needs to be a fully compatible system, not necessarily built around that particular i5.

Read and answer the above link. Primarily, use and budget are the two key concepts.
