So a while ago my sound on my windows xp computer worked great, but then it was stuck on an auto reboot cycle. I did everything I could but it would go back to the original desktop. So I completely re-installed windows. I got all the drivers necessary but sound still wont work. I do remember that before I re installed windows, everytime I plugged in headphones it would have a pop up that would show me all the ports and let me select what audio device I had plugged in, now it doesn't do anything.

I have installed realtec drivers
I have done all the basic troubleshooting with audio.
I think I just need that program that would show all the ports when I plugged something in and let me pick if it were headphones and control volume and such.

Solution
it sounds like you might not really have the right drivers for your sound card. What model PC is this?
If you're really sure that it IS the correct driver you have, go into device manager and uninstall the sound card, uninstall the supporting software in add/remove programs, reboot, install supporting software, reboot once more.
