Hi, I've had my ASUS laptop now for 4 or so years and im finding it to have a lot of issues.

Specs:

CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6300HQ CPU @ 2.30GHz, 2304 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

GPU - Nvidia geforce GTX 960M

RAM - 8gb

OS - Microsoft windows 10 pro

So recently my computer was running very slow and i was getting smart warnings saying my hardrive was going to fail. Thats fine i had it replaced 3 weeks ago. Before and after that i have been getting far lower fps than i used to 1 or so years ago in EVERY game. The computer is also running quite a bit slower (despite the hard drive replacement. The guy who replaced it was saying my previous hardrive was the worst one out there but im doubting how much better this new one is). NVIDIA geforce experience tells me that my OPTIMAL settings for most games are essentially high-max settings. If i try and run any modern-ish game on those settings i get 20 fps. I find i have to run everything on the very lowest all the time. That being said one time i wiped my pc when i was having hard drive problems (i hoped smart had just gotten it wrong and my hardrive was really fine. it wasnt). After this i reinstalled some games so i could still play in the meantime until i sent my computer off to get the hardrive replaced. During this period of time i launched a game which i was previously running on lowest settings and getting 80 or so fps. Since the game was a fresh installation settings were on pretty much max for me, and i was getting 100 fps. The next time i launched the game though, this was no longer the case. Notably i tried wiping my laptop again and i found that, once again, i could not run games on high settings with more than 20-30 fps. There was a time 1 years ago when i was able to run games on good settings, and i think i remember a turning point when suddenly i had to turn all my settings down. For some reason i didn't troubleshoot the issue then and so im still stuck with it now

On a side note i have also been getting random lag spikes every 30 secs/couple of minutes where my usual 60-100 fps drops to 20-30 fps for any amount of time between 10 seconds and 1 minute. This has only started happening recently after i installed the latest game driver update from geforce experience. To fix this i tried installing an older driver when i was not getting these spikes and it said that the driver was not compatible or something along those lines. On top of this i have had a painfully slow start up since my hardrive was replaced.

Hope someone can help. Thanks

Solution
1-Seems like a heating problem to me,so better monitor the temps with AMD overdrive and post the result here.
2-Try running a full scan with Malwarebyter just to eliminate any probable trojan which might lead to lagging of your PC.
3-Try updating all of the driver(even BIOS too)
4-Do a complete cleanup of your LAptop as mostly dust gets accumulated in the exhaust fans and might lead to overheating and the series of lag continues, lolz

So all the best and hope any of my suggestions might fix your problem.
Happy gaming.

Thanks so much for the fast and detail response. In response the heating point, i have a heater under my desk for winter. Would that somehow affect core temp? It does make the desk below the laptop fairly warm

To rule out whether temps are the culprit here(which i think it is) i'll suggest u to shift ur heater to some other place and give ur laptop a shot.
Lets hope it fixes the problem.
If nothing else works try doing a fresh Windows installation.!

Cleaning dust out of the vents with compressed air completely fixed it for me i think. I did all of the above before cleaning the fans but judging by the amount of dust that came out, and the fact that my computer felt noticeably cooler as well as quieter, i believe that problem was indeed overheating. Thanks so much!
