i have an msi rx 580 gaming currently in my computer and while going through willhaben(austrian second hand webshop like craigslist or ebay) i found that someone was selling his rx 580 armor 8gb for only 280 euros now i know that the gaming series is usually better than the armor(thats why its more expensive i guess) but i was thinking if the more vram was worth it (i also suspect that i can sell my 580 for a healthy 300 since theyre in high demand and the same model with 8GB are at 400+) should i buy it?

p.s. on the ad he said that i can run any test and that he has the receipt and original packaging
p.p.s. im only playing on 1080p atm
p.p.p.s. im also mining a bit of eth on the side for a bit of money(im a student)

Solution
Stress test it extensively with unigine and furmark. If the card is in good shape and has original papers, then i dont see any reason not to get it, specially when you are not loosing any money on it, and making a profit on the contrary. You get more vram which can be handy in some games as well as a definite improvement on game fps. And you stand to gain around $20 from the exchange if you can pull off what you have said. The variant doesnt matter as they perform equally more or less, barring a few fps here or there.

It is not worth €280. Only a few games can really take advantage of 8GB vs 4GB of vRAM.

In the end, do you have any FPS issues with your current rig? If not then there is no reason to upgrade. If you do, I will suggest investing your money in a GPU that are a higher model. Replacing those 2 GPUs won't give you any noticeable performance increase.

goddamit it was already sold, what do you think about the MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming 6G for 250?
sorry to bother you again

As for memory, a GTX 1060 or an RX 580 don't need the extra memory. This memory is only necessary at higher resolution aka 1440p for minimum , but more for 2160p.

It is nice for AMD to offer it, but the 4GB version is a much better buy IMO.

not really but im getting random crashes in ark so i thought memory might be a problem, also is it better to save up for a 1440p monitor and then look at the 1070?, because apparently the 1070 is overkill for 1080p

Dont go for a 1060 at its original price from a 580. Not worth the price you pay. For 1080p, the 580 should more than suffice. Save up for a better card and monitor and then purchase.

Those random crashed might as well be another problem than your GPU, at least you should try to find out the cause of your issue first, before buying anything.
The GTX 1070 may be a bit overkill for 1080p, but it will last longer than the GTX 1060. For example in 3 years from now, the GTX 1060 might struggle on new games at highest settings while the GTX 1070 would still be fine. But obviously that's a decision you have to make if it's worth it. All I'm saying is that the GTX 1060 is no upgrade over your RX 580.

I also run a RX 580 4GB version although from Sapphire. Its plenty for 1080p. I doubt you would even notice a change in performance. Use the money on another upgrade.

I get crashes in some games too. Usually due to the game itself BF1 crashed when I ran a 780gtx too. On occasion the display driver will crash, but no more than my Nvidia cards do.

Forget it. The 580 is better at DX12.

If you want to upgrade, you need to go for at least a 1070 GTX, which I don't recommend since you can get something way better for not that much more.

The Vega 56 can be push to a 64 with a simple BIOS update.

I would just wait next year If I was you. Your RX 580 is way enough at 1080p.

I will tell you the Nvidia story, the EVGA 1080 FTW story... the card that crash in every games with supposedly better drivers than AMD drivers. The cards that died 2 times in less than a year. Bottom line, stick with your card and try to find if your GPU is the problem. RMA your card if you need to and switch after if nothing change.

It's probably just the game to.

You got it there, both company have similar drivers experience. I had numerous AMD cards and Nvidia cards and their drivers are the same. Anyone trying to tell you something else is a liar.

Crash in one game doesnt warrant for a gpu change. Troubleshoot it by running another card if you have one, and then try to locate the source gradually.
Update ur...vcredist, c++ redistributable, directx, ..net framework, gpu drivers before you start to troubleshoot.

Not my point, my point is buying a 1070 GTX now is irrelevant. The Vega 56 is having a lot of headroom making it a better choice. You can just OC it to a 64 anyway without updating the BIOS, but that is not the point. It's a better choice at a similar price.

Well, similar price, not really. Looking at Pcpartpicker they seem more in line with the cheapest GTX 1080. With the exception of a single card from a not so known brand, that are priced way lower than the rest. Also they eat more power than the Nvidia cards.
If you are going to spend $500 on a Vega 56, you might as well get a GTX 1080 for same price that performs better and uses less power.
..Or get the cheaper GTX 1070 TI
