Hi

I have an older processor and looking to upgrade to start pc gaming (Destiny 2). I have a gtx 1060 6 gb, so i think I'm alright with the gpu. My cpu is amd phenom II x4 965.

My motherboard is an msi ms-7596 and I'm just needing to know which cpu would be compatible with my motherboard which would be a good deal better than the phenom II I have. (Maybe i need to upgrade my motherboard too?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The GTX 1060 is a good and very capable card for 1080p 60Hz gaming.
Your CPU however is another story. I don't think there is any upgrade worth the money for that old platform and it looks like your mobo supports no higher than a phenom II X6.
You need to move on to a new platform which means new CPU, new motherboard and new DDR4 RAM.

My reading says that your 760gb motherboard is of poor quality and is not fit for a FX-6 or FX-8 processor.

Not that you would want to anyway. FX cores are slow and few games can make good use of more than 2-3 threads.

Do not waste your money on an obsolete platform.
Single thread performance is most important once you have 4 threads.
Here are some passmark single thread ratings:
X4-965 1185.
FX-6100 1185(6 threads)
G4560 1984.
What is your budget?
$200 will buy you a cpu upgrade with as little as a G4560/lga1151 motherboard and 8gb of ddr4 ram.
You can go up from there.

My budget would be around 250 for cpu and mobo right now. The g4560 would be good for How cheap it is. If I could pull off 1080/60fps all the time, I'd go with as budget setup as I could get away with.

Thanks for all the replies!

Or wait for next years cheaper B360 motherboards and pair that with the I3-8100 for a quad core CPU.

Thanks, the top choices would probably do just fine for gaming. I'll be looking into this soon!
