Hello all. I was in the middle of playing a game if Overwatch, when my PC just turned off on its own. I've had a history of BSODs with this build, meanwhile the friend with an identical Mobo/cpu/ram/PSU/gpu build has not experienced any problems. I'm pretty sure I have the problem isolated to the cpu and I want to replace it. Looking at current prices, I can save some money upgrading from my 5820 to a 6800. They only problem with that is that my Mobo bios is not new enough to support it. My fault for not keeping up, I know. But I went through to ASUS's website and grabbed the latest bios file and extracted the .CAP. I renamed it to X99ST.CAP and put it in the bios flashback spot. I held the button for flashback until it started flashing, then let it do it's thing. It flashed for a while and eventually stopped. Now, when I look in TUF detective, it shows my BIOS version is still the old 1801, not the new 3701.

I know the USB stick is formatted as vfat. The mobo hasn't made it past POST code 0000 since it shutdown mid game. But it is my understanding that the BIOS Flashback technology doesn't need a functioning cpu to flash the board. Anyone with more experience have any ideas?

Reformatted the thumb drive to Fat32 and tried again. Same result. The bios flashback light blinked for a while, then about twice as fast for a while, then stopped. TUF Detective still reports version 1801.

Correct. TUF Detective reports post code 0000 with the description "Power standby in". When I press the power button nothing happens. When i try to power on through TUF Detective, nothing happens. The power standby LED is illuminated on the motherboard as long as the power supply is on. The thermal sensors on the motherboard report through TUF Detective, seemingly accurately. The only exceptions being the CPU and MB sensors, which report 0 C. So I think the motherboard is still functional. Not 100% though.

Tried another flash drive with an earlier version of the bios. Formatted as fat 16 just to try, light stayed solid on the flashback button. Formatted as fat 32, and stuck with the earlier bios(1901) it behaved the same as the first thumbdrive with the newer bios(3701): The led blinked for a few minutes, then blinked faster. After it finished blinking, TUF Detective reports the same version of bios that I had at the outset(1801).

I pulled everything off the board. Disconnected everything except the power 24 pin ATX and the 8 pin cpu power. I even pulled it out of the case, because my CPU cooler was tough to remove. Tried to flashback again, and got the same result. Flashback button blinked for a while, then sped up and blinked faster. Then it stopped blinking. TUF Detective still reports 1801, even though I have the 3701 cap file on the drive as X99ST.CAP.

Just tried again with the 1901 cap, same filename, on the second thumbdrive.

Should the board always stay at POST code 0000 "Power Standby In" even when trying to power in through TUF Detective? I mean, I know there's no hardware to check, but shouldn't it report that there's no cpu with another code?

Edit: Actually. TUF Detective is still reporting my ram and cpu model as if they were still installed. Is there anyway to clear the cached info?
