Hi all!
I bought a wifi card with 3 omni antenna, and i want to know which is the best antenna orientation for maximum coverage. Some options:

\ | / or | | | or ___ | ___ or \ | __

Any opinions are more than appreciated.

Thanks all!

The signal radiates out like a donut around the antenna, that should help you visualize what's going on. If you only have one floor then | | | would probably be your best bet. I would only turn an antenna on it's side if you had a device directly above or below the router that needed to be connected with the strongest possible connection.

If you have two floors then \ | / would probably be the ideal configuration.

EDIT: Whoops, I just say that you said wifi card, I thought you were talking about a router. I guess the concept still applies though.

Yup. There are two factors to consider.

  • ■Signal radiates as a donut (imagine dropping a huge donut on the antenna with the antenna sticking up the hole). So you want the meat of the donut to intersect your router.
■You want the antenna orientation of the WiFi card to be as close to parallel to the antenna orientation on the router.
This is really easy if you have a one-story house. | | |. But if you have two floors, you'll have to play with the antenna orientation on both the router and WiFi card to satisfy both criteria. Also note that even if you tilt an antenna, you also need to worry about its rotation (which direction it's tilted).

thank you so much guys, i already know the concept of how an antenna radiates, by the way the antennas i have are 7dbi each and i want to do WiFi pen-testing. since i will not know where are the access points located , i want a universal maximum coverage (top floor, middle floor and bottom floor). what about WiFi radiation hitting each other ? is that "lost power" ?

Thanks
