Bought new GPU, Windows Aero switching to Basic during the game? Any thoughts?

Hi!
Firs of all, English isn't my native language, so excuse me if there will be mistakes in here.

My specs:
i5-4460
GTX1060 6Gb (was GTX770 2Gb)
4x4Gb DDR-3 1600 RAM

The things is, there is a game X. The game X isn't very GPU-demanding and I've been playing X for a long time on 770 with no problems at max settings, 144FPS (FPS vary of course), Vsync on. Around one week ago I've switched to 1060 which my CPU should've dealt fine with.

However some strange thing happened twice already - during the gameplay there were moments where the screen flickered one time and then after alt tabbing I've discovered that Windows Aero theme is replaced with Basic one. The theme reverted back to normal one by itself in 10 or 15 minutes.
I've checked Afterburner logs and discovered that around the time when this happened CPU peaked 100% (GPU did the same) load for a short period of time. The only noticeable thing other than that is GPU Bus Controller Usage (hope I've spelled it right) suddenly spiked from 1 up to 50 (all the other times it was below 15) and VID Controller Usage spike up to 84 (usually it's 40 at max).

I can't understand why. Settings are the same, FPS is a bit more stable but can be compared to 770.

Check RAM usage in your Afterburner also. The only times I remember Windows switching themes was on the old bad Windows 7 when it "thought" it didn't have enough RAM. Besides that, do what the previous person said.

Yup.

Looks Ok to me - 9Gb at max. Around the time of spike its usage was even lower - around 8Gb.

Well your CPU shouldn't be bottlenecking you, you could probably see Youtube videos with your CPU+GPU for reference fps.
Windows Aero, are you still using Windows 7? That Windows was terrible with RAM usage and it always switches off Windows Aero unless you tell it not to. That's not a big issue. Try using a different display adapter see if the flickering still happens.

And as mentioned before, did you use DDU to do a clean install after upgrading your GPU? That's very important.

It shouldn't - at least not in up-to-4-players-coop/singleplayer games - but that was the only culprit I was able to think of.

As for the RAM usage, I'm not sure. I've been using Win7 for a long time and don't recall a single time when I ran out of RAM. Moreover, with the previous 770 GPU I was able to run Chrome and torrent client in background (while playing) without Win7 switching to basic theme - and both these apps are known for their RAM drain.

No, it wasn't the DDU method, I used the clean install option when installed the new nvidia driver. Thanks for the tip, just used the DDU, will see how the things are going now.

Forgot to add - after I've created this topic I've limited FPS to ~72 as a workaround and there weren't any spikes.

Like I said, I used to play with 144FPS (vsync on) without any problems with the previous (770) GPU. And RAM usage is OK as well, yeah.
