Are the Costco under $500 desktops worth it?

The link you put up is not working.

For me, every modern PC should have a SSD. It is one of the best upgrades one can make. It will make the entire PC experience much better. Boot and load times will be sped up exponentially and your system will feel much more responsive with the OS loaded on a SSD.

I would always recommend building your computer yourself. You may not have Costco's return policy, but a computer you build yourself can be easier to maintain and upgrade. It also won't be loaded with bloatware that will slow it down.

Here's a list of parts that are comparable to the computer your friend recommended. This computer has the same CPU and amount of RAM, and has both a hard drive and an SSD for about the same price as the prebuilt. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/sam_86314/saved/zsBTHx. Unlike the prebuilt, however, it doesn't come with a copy of Windows, so you'd have to buy that separately.

Heed your friends advice. An SSD will make the computer feel many times faster than a HDD in daily usage. The only reason to get a computer with a HDD rather than an SSD is if you need a lot of storage space and can't afford both. With so many people moving to Google Photos or similar services. Even shutterbugs don't need much storage space anymore.

A five year old Core i3 can feel faster than a brand new i7 to the average user. If the i3 has an SSD and the i7 has a HDD. This is because the speed of the boot drive is often the bottleneck for the average user. Most regular day to day tasks won't cause a CPU to hit 100% usage.

Based on my experience doing on site IT work. For about 95% of people. 256GB is way more storage space than they need. So, I wouldn't worry too much about the size. You can always buy an external hard drive.

Thx Sam but this pc is for my father in law and he has no idea on how to build one. So I'm looking for a new ready out of the box machine.

Sorry, It is working, I was not on the USA site.

It is a decent system for a decent price. It will suite all of your needs and then some. As for virus protection, there are a lot of free options available and usually it is cheaper to purchase virus protection online and not in the store. I like Bitdefender, it is not too expensive and works on several machines. And definitely install Malwarebytes as well as it will find things that virus scans wont detect.
