Even though I am a tech enthusiast for years I havent fully undestood something about ram speed. I am gonna build my first pc and i will be getting the i5 8400 which supports up to 2666mhz. I am going to combine the cpu with a Gigabyte z370 aorus gaming ultra mobo. The mobo suggests up to 2666mhz standard and higher speeds but with oc. Are ram modules with more than 2666mhz going to work? Thanks

I just found out that the Ram speed will be automatically lowered by the motherboard to match the normal non oc mobo ram speeds supported. If I want to reach more than that, do I have to OC the Motherboard or the Ram? Do you recommend XMP?

2666 ram has much bigger chance to reach 2666 than <2666 ram, while the rams on the 2666 QVL list above is guaranteed for 2666.
OC 2666 to 4000 is very very hard and that is why 4000 rams are more expensive. For normal usage with Intel, 2666 is good enough, only small diff in FPS for 2666+ rams compared to 2666, I will probably get 3000 rams just in case.

I am not gonna buy ram slower than 2666mhz. I just want to know if 3000mhz ram will work with that mobo. I dont really care about the running speed, i just want to buy a 3000mhz ram cuz i found it to be cheaper than 2666mhz

They are about the same here! G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x4GB 2800Mhz Cas15 costs 96€ and so does the same model with the same cas but 2666mhz speed. Anyway guys your answers helped me! I now know that I can get any ram speed around 2166 and it will work! Thanks
