I've been thinking of upgrading this CPU recently, since I've been told that it's been rather underpreforming in games that I've been trying to play such as Forza Horizon 3 or some Battlefield games..

I'm interested in any CPUs on the market right now that's rather popular for it's speed. Ontop of that, i'll probably need a motherboard to go with it. The games I tend to play are large open world games, so I imagine i'll need something powerful to go with it. My Budget is 400-500 max for the CPU itself, but something cheaper would be pleasant as well.

Your motherboard wont support a 4790k and I would not build a system with a 4790k unless I had the components. You will do...
What motherboard do you currently have?

The issue that you have is you will need an entire new platform upgrade CPU/Mobo/RAM, which is basically a new system. Pending your motherboard, you may be able to drop a 4790k and keep everything the way it is. The 4790k is still a very good CPU and this would be a cheaper route.

This would be a really good build. With a budget of $600 I would go with the 8600k, but that wont be possible at $500.

This would be my current Motherboard. I do plan on buying a new set of DDR4 ram is the old Mobo suppports I've been recommended to pick up the AMD - Ryzen 5 1600X so far.

I'll look into the 4790k as well though!

Have you overclocked it? it's still a good enough CPU for most games I would have thought but looking at the minimum requirements for Forza Horizon 3 I see it says an i7 3820 which is an odd suggestion for a gaming PC but a little slower than a 3770K in any case.

If you have a decent cooler and have not overclocked it might be worth a try if you don't mind the risk. 4Ghz should be easy enough and maybe a little more, I've heard they often hit 4.2 stable.

Your motherboard wont support a 4790k and I would not build a system with a 4790k unless I had the components. You will do better by going with a newer Intel or AMD CPU.

The 1600x is a very good CPU, however, I would go with the 1600 as it is cheaper and comes with a stock cooler. The 1600 will overclock to the same speeds as a 1600x even with a stock cooler.

With all that being said, the i5 8400 is about 20% faster than a Ryzen 1600x and they are priced the same. The only issue is that the z370 motherboards cost a little bit more.

You have been told it under-performs, or tested it yourself? MSI Afterburner can tell you what percentage of your CPU is actually being used. With a AIO water cooler, you can easily get a stable 4.2 or 4.4 overclock even if you didn't win the silicon lottery.

My 3970K is running a stable turbo overclock with a 240mm AIO of 4.6Ghz at max temps of 67DegC.
