What do you actually get with Fire Stick, Roku, and the lot?

For your money, the only thing you get is the hardware? You have to subscribe to streaming services on top of the hardware purchase to view any sort of content, correct?

People have told me that they get anything they want after buying one of these devices, but everything I've read indicates all content is subscription based. I may as well stick with cable, if that's the case.

I understand that stuff like HBO would not be free on any platform, but why the hell would I pay a monthly fee to watch CNN?

Solution
Some people get hacked streaming devises that allow them to watch pirated material. That is why some people say they do not pay anything for the programming.

You are correct that you are supposed to get a subscription for the channels you wish to watch (Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc.)

All that a fire stick or Roku does is turn a dumb TV into a smart one.

Like any piece of hardware, they can be hacked to do things they are not necessarily designed to do. If you purchase a fire stick, you can hack it to watch pirated content. It takes all of 10 minutes, but it is illegal.

on my roku I could access hulu I were a subscriber, Netflix and amazon prime which I do subscribe, crackle which is free and ad supported, and myriad other channels. almost everything on roku is on demand, you have to start it, if you are looking to turn on a device and be done with it cable may be the best choice for you.

not all content is subscription based. there are many ad supported movie and series channels available. I find an antenna, netflix and amazon enough.
HBO go can either be subscribed to separately or added on to amazon prime

Get a digital antenna? Are those 1080p these days?

We already have Netflix and Amazon Prime. We have a smart TV. I was hoping to get rid of Comcast, because the price is simply insane considering how few channels we actually watch.

Maybe Sling Blue has what we want. For $25 a month, it is a better bargain than cable—I think.

Getting one of these is also a convenience. I use the 'Stick when I want to watch something, instead of lugging my laptop and having to sit in front of it to navigate.

And in case of the 'Stick, "hacking" consist of installing Kodi, and then connecting it to my home media server - another convenience.

interestingly, broadcast signals, here in the US, are digital and higher definition than you're pulling down from comcast mainly because there's no concern for bandwidth "choking" or clogging the pipeline - once the signal leaves the antennas, the airwaves are exactly that, traveling thru the air

I've got one, getting ready to put it up, but it's surprising how many TV stations i'm supposed to be able to pull down - there are websites that will tell you what stations you can receive, and what direction to point your antenna toward
