PCIe 3.o video card with PCIe 2.0 motherboard

I have a SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 can I use a ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB ROG STRIX OC Edition VR Ready HDMI 2.0 DP 1.4 Graphic Card with it?

Would I be wasting the power of the GTX 1060 using the Sabertooth, or causing a future problem. I'm asking because atm I'm using a GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST. I didn't know until tonight that it also is a PCIe 3.0 card. It's been running hot 80c playing WoW or Diablo3 - last month or so. I have ordered the 1060, and just noticed the PCIe diff. Not sure how I missed that 3 yrs ago when I 1st choose the mb and video card. I'm guessing I probably at this point should bite the bullet and buy a new motherboard........Any thoughts. Thanks!!!!!

The main reason I wasn't replacing the motherboard besides normal save $$ reasons, is it seems been great. I know tho 3 yrs is a long time now a days.
