Help! Looking to upgrade my pc but don’t know where to begin. Have a 8350 fx with a 960. Any thing is helpful.

Solution
FX 8350 is still good enough if u're not looking on high refresh rate [60/75hz should be still within reason]

with the amount of money u need spent on Ryzen + 1060, u can perhaps look into 1070 / 1070 Ti / Vega 54 [if u're thinking on getting a freesync monitor too] instead, the gaming performance boost would be much more significant and u should be able to play on most title these days on ultra :)

if ur RAM is below 8GB, get at least 8GB, most games would love that

I suggest you to go for the GPU upgrade because of the following reasons
1>GTX 1060(6GB) is 75% faster than GTX 960
2>Ryzen 3 1300x is 33% faster than FX 8350
so decide yourself which upgrade do you need.
Also you need to buy new RAM module and motherboard if you want CPU upgrade.

For a gaming build, you always, always, always want to spend your money on the GPU. So there is no doubt that I would go for the 1060.

If you want to get a 1070 or higher, I would want to know what monitor you are playing at. If you are playing at 1080p on a 60hz panel, then there is no reason to get a 1070 or higher. If you are playing on a 144hz panel, then it may make some sense.

The 8350 will get you by for now, but it is a mediocre CPU at best. So I would plan on getting an upgrade in 2018 which will not be cheap as you will need CPU/Mobo/RAM. The Ryzen 1600 is a very good CPU, but the 8400 beats it soundly and they are in the same price range. The H370 boards will be released next year and will be the perfect time for an 8400. There will probably be a Ryzen refresh next year too. So in short, next year may be a very good year to get a new CPU.

Is it worth for Mid range PC builders to wait for a year?
Also new volta GPU's (2000 series) are going to be released in 2018.
My opinion is just upgrade to GTX 1060, then sell the old PC next year and build a new one for better perfomance

if u want to wait, i would rather say: "don't upgrade at all"
the GTX 960 performs on par with 1050ti, which is still good for 1080p@med-high, so instead of buying the already scarce and overpriced GTX 1060 [well at least in my country it does... starts about 280$ here, used btw...] i would suggest u don't upgrade at all, u're better off saving up from now and when volta and perhaps Zen+/Icelake released, get a full-fledged high end PC and blast on XD

though if u still insist, yes the performance difference are pretty damn good, u can play almost all games on high/ultra settings with it :D

New GPUs are released every year. I dont recommend waiting because by the time Volta is released, there will be another release soon on the horizon. Considering it is just November, and competition is not great with GPUs right now, I dont expect Nvidia to release Volta at CES. It will probably be released in Q2 and I can promise your stock will be low and prices will be high for awhile. There is a good chance that you would not see AIB cards at reasonable prices on store shelves till Q3. That is almost a year from now, so no, I would not wait.

The only time I recommend waiting is when new hardware will be released with 2 months. But that is just me.

What I do for GPU releases, is I buy the highend card upon release. And sell you current card on the second hand market. This way I usually pay half price for the latest and greatest card. For example, when the 1080ti released I sold my 1080 for $400 and bought the 1080ti for $799 (actually, I sold and bought 2 1080s for 2 1080tis because I run sli). But I am a junkie and most people dont need the latest and greatest card. The point being, if you buy a 1060 today, it will have reasonable resale value when Volta is released. I have found that moving the used GPU for half of the price of the upgrade GPU is a good formula.
