VPN through my router causing very slow speeds

I have a 100Mb connection. I recently subscribed to a VPN, and using their Windows app, my speeds only go down to around 70Mb/s. I decided to configure my router for the VPN instead of using the app, as I was having issues casting to my TV. My router is an ASUS RT-N66U. I got VPN up and running through the router and did a speed test, and the speed plummeted all the way down to 10Mb/s. I'm using the exact same server that I was using for the app, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Anyone have any ideas?

As bill says your N66 is underpowered for the job of handling SSL decryption plus your other tasks.

I have an Asus AC68P with dual core processor and I only get 35-50mbps from PIA.

(I feel like I am walking around the forums following bill with a sign that says "what he said").
CPU in a router is tiny compared to a computer. Hard to say exactly how much you can get, openvpn uses SSL which is extremely processor intensive. VPN using IPSEC tends to run a bit faster if the VPN provider allows that as a option. IPSEC is a much more simplistic encryption but is just as secure if not more secure that SSL.

If you look at commercial vpn boxes that rate the throughput speeds you will quickly find that ones that can really pass 100mb of traffic are kinda expensive. You seldom see data on how much vpn a consumer router can pass.

Well, that is certainly discouraging to hear. I may just have to stick with the VPN app on my PC for now, until I can afford a better router. Thanks for the reply.
