I just learned about VPN's(lol don't have a smart phone) I want to protect my home network by adding a VPN to my router but I have a TP-LINK archer c-9,which doesn't have the capabilty. So I need help finding a WiFi router that will accept "open WRT or DDwrt" It's really confusing .but I think maybe(cost is important)linksys wrt 1200ac or linksys 1900 or ASUS ac1750 or ASUS rt n66
What does anyone think or are there anyother suggestions? I'm running 100 Mps internet.

when I said protection I meant Privacy protection from my isp, google etc... thanks for the input

I see because running the "server" form of vpn where you are attempting to remotely access your local network from the internet actually puts your home network at more risk just because it exists and someone might gain access.

Running the client form of vpn hides some information from your ISP. The VPN service of course can see everything and everything past the VPN service can see your traffic but it is hard to tie it back to your computer.

Google is a different issue. They run so many scripts and tracking cookies it is hard to prevent data collection. Things like adblocker and ghostery are good starts but to really stop google you are going to have to run a script blocker which makes web browsing painful because you must manually allow each script but it does stop a lot of things nothing else will.

I don't watch youtube videos a lot of them are idiots that have never worked in IT,have no idea on this one since I don't care to watch it.

VPN is not some magic solution. Most your data is already encrypted by the browser using HTTPS so it in effect forms a vpn between your machine and the server so external people intercepting is not the large issue. Almost all sites started moving to https after it was revealed the governments were intercepting and collecting data.

VPN is going to slow your connection down a bit and it will cost you a monthly fee. If it is worth it to "feel" more secure only you would know. The main use of vpn by many people is to bypass some form of restrictions.
