Hey everyone,

Need your input, please. Currently I have a GTX 970 and I'm thinking of upgrading it (and maybe get a new monitor?). Which one do you think is a better option? One that will not require me to upgrade in the next 4-5 years, I guess.

1. RX 580 + 144Hz 1080p freesync monitor

or

2. GTX 1070 (and still use my 75Hz 1080p monitor)

I mostly play MMORPGs/RPGs (e.g. FFXIV), while my brother who also uses the computer, plays Overwatch. CPU is i7 3770K with 650W PSU.

Thanks in advance!

Of those two choices I would go with the 580 and the 1080p 144Hz Freesync monitor even though the 1070 is quite a bit more powerful. I use a 1070 with a 1440p 144Hz Gsync monitor and I have to say these variable refresh rate monitors...

The 1070 is clearly the better card but I get 100+ FPS with mine in most games at 1440p. On a 1080p 75Hz monitor the extra power it provides over a RX 580 wouldn't be seen in most games since a 580 will be capable of 75+ FPS in most of them.

A 580 won't get you 144 FPS in most brand new AAA games but it should in the titles you mentioned. Besides, games that run between 75 FPS and 144 FPS are where gsync/freesync really shine anyways. If you were always at 144 FPS you wouldn't even need that technology.

I just upgraded my 970 to a 1070 and I am very happy with it on my old 75 Hz monitor.
If you want a new monitor soon I would go with AMD and Freesync.
I have read that Gsync has a little more frequency range but it's not worth the extra $200+.
