I've searched up a bit about upgrading ram on my laptop. The X550JX had a 4gb soldered with one upgradeable slot.
Looking at sites such as crucial.com it says it would support 8gb in each slot.
Reading some posts it suggests not to unsolder the ram and also there's no guarantee replacing the soldered ram would be compatible with the motherboard.
Others also suggested simply putting a 4GB ram into the free slot do both work well simultaneously without issues rather than putting 8gb in the free slot.
I decided to email ASUS about this and they responded with the following:

Thank you for contacting Asus, my name is Edward and I will try my best to assist you with your situation.
We are extremely sorry to hear that you are facing issues with your X550JX.
Based on the provided information I understand that you need more information regarding the RAM.

We do not recommend replacing the soldered RAM but the free slot should support up to 12 GB DDRIIIL 1600

I'm just wondering how well would a 8GB or 12GB card perform with the already included 4gb?

I currently also have a 1TB hard drive and look to move to SSD.
I'd also like the laptop to run games such as FIFA, GTA, COD and other high requirement games without having the laptop start slowing down drastically or having lags. Along with that I'm looking at possibly being able to run video/image editing software but that would not be a massive priority.

Might be a long question for some but maybe a shorter question, if I was to pair a ram stick of a different size while sticking to DDRIIIL 1600, with the soldered is it fine to do so? I.e can your soldered ram be different to unsoldered ram in contrast to having to pair unsoldered sticks?
