NAS in a Toaster

I purchased two HGST Deskstar NAS drives and a usb 3 toaster and they don't work together. I also tried them in an older usb 2 toaster with the same results. Any ideas?

Thanks for getting back. I figured out that the drive was unformatted and I'm currently waiting for the 6tb HGST drive to format. I guess I'd gotten used to having drives come formatted. Goes to show that "back to basics" never gets too old.
