Hello, for more than five years I'm a happy owner of a Phenom X6 1100T, 8gb 1333mhz, SSD, with a radeon HD 7970.

I can play almost anything with this old setup, but recently I started to play PUBG Battlegrounds and started having trouble with low FPS to the point its affecting my gameplay.

I want to know if I will have a insane bottleneck putting a 1080 gtx in this rig. What do you guys think ?

If so, it there a way to decrease the bottleneck ? Maybe changing something but staying with the same mobo ?

And if you are wondering: "Why not buy a entire new PC ?"

1 - Because this is a excelent PC and I would have to throw it in the garbage because I will have no use for it and, also, its not worth it selling it (almost zero selling value + 5 years of heavy use)

2 - Buying just the gpu FOR NOW would be cheaper and if (only if) other parts start to fail, them I will buy a new one.

Thank you all for you attention.

Some will say it doesn't make sense to spend 300 on a 1060, however, if your budget is absolutely limited, you still want the best you can get of that series. I personally went with an Asus STRIX and decided to wait out for Volta. I had aimed for a...

There are a couple of bottlenecks in your system currently. Your CPU will not work well with the 1080, and you would want/need a newer CPU. Also, the 1080 works best with 16GB of RAM. The biggest question on whether or not you can run the 1080 is what your PSU wattage is as the 1080 requires minimum 600w and requires both 6 and 8-pin molex connectors.

Agree that there are significant bottlenecks, however I'd correct this slightly to say there are GTX1080s out there only requiring 1X 8-pin connector. The Founders Edition for sure, and I'm assuming a few other not-highly-overclocked versions (though yes, most higher end ones are 1X6 + 1X8)

Ryzen 5 would be a suited upgrade for you. I am about a week away from ordering my new Ryzen build. The Phenom II was great in its time, but now is old architecture, and will not only cheat you out of FPS, but will certainly bottleneck the 1080. That is just my opinion. I loved the Phenom series back in the day while the 1090T was my sweet spot. A Ryzen 5 uses low power, with newer improved architecture that can better utilize resources, including DDR4 support. I myself am going with a 1600 6 core and a 1080. The 1600 is about 200 bucks.

I tried but get weird crashes even with VERY light overclocks of GPU or CPU.

My PSU is a 650w Corsair. Do you think my PSU is not strong enough ?

Maybe a solution would be selling your card and getting something like a GTX1060? That would give you maybe a ~50% bump in performance without costing too much, and would allow you to use your other hardware without wasting money on a 1080 that would be bottlenecked

I dont think its fair to sell a 5 year old card with a lot of overclocked hours lol. But great idea about 1060, less than twice the price (some versions).

Do you recommend a specific variant of 1060 ? Thank you!

Oh I would still sell it, I would just be upfront about the overclocking in the description. You'd be surprised how well graphics cards can hold their value, or you should at least try looking for similar ones recently sold on Ebay.

As for a variant, no not really, just go for the 6GB if you want it to be more future proof. 3GB memory will get eaten up going forward with games.

I personally went with an Asus STRIX and decided to wait out for Volta. I had aimed for a 1080 like I said above, but I went for a balance of quality with this build, setting my budget back. In my opinion however, and many others, the STRIX is the best out of the 1060 cards, but not really necessary. Although I was crazy enough to pay 300, you would be happy with an EVGA SC for around 260. The 1070 is still a lot more, so it is not that unreasonable to pay 300. The Strix is a big card however.

I want to add details I forgot to mention: The Asus Strix is going to be the best over-clocker, and the most cool temps. However, the EVGA 1060 will overclock better right out of the box. Honestly, the EVGA is the better deal, but I wanted to spend a little more to overclock, and have RGB lighting.
