Problems putting used hard drive in system

I’m using an upgraded office computer as my PC and am running out of space on the 500gb hard drive it had. It turns out that my dad had another old office computer with a 2tb hard drive in it. I tried to connect it to my system, but I ran into some problems.
I want to wipe the 2tb drive and move the contents of the 500gb drive onto it. I can’t access disk manager to wipe the drive though. It gets stuck at “connecting to virtual disk service”. Device manager can see the drive and says it’s working properly. On the “my computer” screen, it shows the 500gb drive as C drive and shows blank D, E, and F drives. The 2tb drive is connected to the SATA 3 port, so it should be the F drive. I could right click it and choose to format it, and the default options indicated that it recognized the 2tb hard drive, but when I did, windows said it was unable to complete the formatting. It also took like 10 minutes to shut down.
So I’m not sure what to do. Any help?

The 2TB drive is probably much faster than the 500GB so I would simply clone the 500GB to the 2TB, then boot from the 2TB

Windows 10 requires an up-to-date cloning tool to make sure the BCD settings survive the trip over but there are many which will do the job. I prefer to use the bootable kind where you don't need to install anything, and used to recommend Minitool Partition Wizard but apparently they've gone and made the bootable one payware while the install version is still free. Macrium Reflect rescue CD or USB is another option.

If you are going to install something then Western Digital has a free version of Acronis here, and Seagate has their version as well.

1. Have you tried to utilize DiskPart to "clean" the 2 TB HDD?

2. If that works then you can perform the disk-cloning operation BFG... suggests. But before you do...

3. Just one thing more if the preceding is viable...properly configure your 500 GB boot drive. Sounds like it can stand a reconfiguration. Submit a screenshot of Disk Management and we'll see what's what.

After trying a bunch of stuff, I ended up having even more problems than before. Diskpart did not load, I couldn't type anything into the command window. I tried the WD edition of Acronis, but it didn't recognize the WD hard drive. When I tried Seagate Diskwizard, I got it to work up to a point. I could select the cloning operation and everything seemed fine, other than the fact it took very long to load and advance through the options. It then asked me to restart. After doing so, it gave me a black screen. Looking online, it seemed this was a visual glitch and the cloning process would complete if I left it alone. I literally left it overnight, and nothing changed. The hard drive activity indicator light was off the whole time. I then tried to press some buttons on the keyboard, which caused the system to shut down. On restart, booting from the 500gb drive, I get the 0xc00000f error code. I also tried to boot from the 2tb drive, which says that there's an IO error. So neither drive is working now.

I'm thinking that there was something wrong with the 2tb hard drive, since when I had it connected to my system, everything involving hard drives either took extremely long to load or didn't load at all. At one point, I opened Speccy to check something, and noticed that the disk drives category took very long to load. When it eventually did load, it detected both drives, but the status of the 2tb drive was "warning". Task manager also seemed to detect the hard disk, saying that it was the D, E, and F drives. It could also see the disk usage, which was often pegged at 100%. When the drive was disconnected, everything returned to normal.

It doesn't make sense to me though, since this drive was used in an office computer that worked before. It was a different operating system, probably windows 7, if that makes a difference. I tried changing SATA ports and swapping SATA cables, but no change. Having everything load so slowly made trying different configurations very tedious, as it took at least 5 minutes to boot up and over 10 minutes to shut down.

I'm going to focus on fixing my 500gb hard drive now. If anyone can tell me why my system acts like this, that would be nice.

Frankly I don't think anyone can tell you what's amiss with your 500 GB boot HDD based on the info you provided. The bottom line is that it certainly sounds like you're either working with a defective/failing drive or one that's seriously corrupted as evidenced by your statement that "Diskpart did not load". That's ominous - make no mistake about it.

Obviously (if you can) you should test the drive with a HDD diagnostic program to determine if it's defective. Assuming it's not, it seems to me the most practical course of action for you is to fresh-install an OS onto that drive, or perhaps another drive, (after saving whatever data you're able to salvage), and then go on from there.

I'm pretty sure the 500gb drive is fine, I think the files just got messed up after the failed cloning operation. I'll try to repair windows 10 with a bootable DVD or something. It's the 2tb hard drive that I don't know what's wrong with. I don't know why it made everything load so slowly. I don't know why I couldn't access the files. I don't know why disk management and diskpart didn't load. Everything worked fine with the 500gb drive, issues only arose when the 2tb drive was connected.

Well of course if the 500 GB drive is non-defective that's one for your side, capiche?. In any event you SHOULD check it out with a HDD diagnostic program, preferably one from the disk's manufacturer.

But there certainly appears to be serious corruption of one sort or another with that drive and if you can "repair" the drive using the various available Windows tools, well & good. So are you indicating that when the 500 GB boot drive is the ONLY drive connected in the system there are no problems with the OS or the drive whatsoever? That it's ONLY when the 2 TB secondary HDD is connected all the problems you've related occur? Is that what you're indicating?

You should also check out the health of the 2 TB HDD as well.

Ok. At the moment, neither drive works. Neither of them can boot. It's very likely that there's corruption. I'm trying to fix the 500gb drive now, with it being the only drive connected to the system.

Before, when the 500gb drive was working, adding the 2tb drive to the system caused some weird problems. That's all I'm saying.

I will definitely check the health of the drive if I can. Sorry if I'm being confusing.
