PC Build Help: Gaming and 4k Video Editing

Hi everyone,

I'm considering a custom build for gaming and 4k video editing. I've built three desktops in the past, but I've been using Macs for a while..

I'm not a heavy gamer, but I'd like to play games such as GTA5 and Flight Simulator games. As for 4k video editing, I'm only just starting, so I don't need a robust machine, but one that can be upgraded in the future.

My budget is around $1600 for the desktop. I'm also interested in a 4k monitor, but I'm not sure how that would impact gaming performance. Suggestions are welcome! :)

I'm also looking at the new Dell Aurora R7, but I don't know how upgradable or future-proof it may be. I think it might still be cheaper to build my own PC.

Realistically for now, either 1080p@144hz or 1440p@60hz for gaming; even a 1080Ti would not hit/maintain 144fps on all titles at 1440p maxed out settings. On the other hand, a monitor stays with you for longer than one build/ one GPU, so a 1440p@144hz + Gsync would be a nice investment if you can fit one into your budget: Eg. the 24" Dell S2417DG ~$400; or the 27" S2716DG ~$500.

In regards to the monitor choice which ones would you recommend? I'm feeling I may need two different monitors - one for gaming and one for 4k photo and video editing.

Which monitors would you recommend for gaming (either FHD or 1440p)?

For a cheaper option, the ViewSonic XG2401 at ~$260 is a strong contender for a 1080p@144hz gaming screen (support Freesync, but not Gsync).
