I want to upgrade my i5 3300 to an i7 7700k

I want to upgrade the processor to an i7 7700k. Is changing only the motherboard to a LGA 1151 enough, or do I also need to change coolers, PSU, etc?

In that case, the i5-8400 will come with a cooler you can use and be significantly cheaper. Though you will still have to buy a Z370 motherboard since no cheaper ones are available at the moment.

When you upgrade a processor to a newer gen, you need AT LEAST a new motherboard and new RAM. Depending on your PSU and cooling, it is recommended to change them to something more adequate however it is not required.

If you're going to upgrade platforms, I suggest upgrading to an 8700k or i5 8600k on the new Z370 platform. They perform much better than 7th gen Intel CPUs in nearly every respect.

They dropped support for Windows 8.1 and earlier for all future CPUs. This has been proven to be partially false, they mostly still work, but to avoid issues you should use Windows 10. Particularly the onboard graphics. Most of the motherboard vendors released a compatible driver, but doing the base install with older Windows versions sometimes encounters issues.

I might advocate for the i5-8600k in place of the i7-7700k, but the i7-8700k is around $400 if you are lucky to find one. Quite a bit to the bottom line for a small improvement at this time, certainly better longevity though. Also need some really good cooling for decent overclocking of a 6 core versus the 4 core. Assuming that is on the table.

Win 7 is almost at EOL anyway, still have one machine running Win 7, luckily I did the upgrade then restored back so it's still Win 10 Machine once I upgrade again. Will do it sometime next year I suppose.

Win 8.1 still has some time left.

But yes it's best to go with Win 10.
