So i am trying to catch-up I am currently running on the I7-4790k. It is starting to lag behind as i edit videos as well as multi-tasking with the newer software. I was looking into the I7 8gens as wellas the Ryzen by AMD. Any thoughts here as to which would be better. I'm more of a lower end gamer than high end. This brings me to my next question. I am also looking into cases and am trying to down size from a full size but am concerned about heat. Any suggestions here? Also is it really worth getting higher speed memory than what the Processor will recognize?

Solution
Sorry for the late-ish reply. For AMD get 2666 2x8 memory and for Intel get 2400 2x8 memory, though coffee lake might have support for 2666. Don't cheap out on the case, though. I recommend The MasterCase Pro 5, it looks great and has many spaces for fans.

i am running off of a gtx 970. I us the video card to accelerate the rendering but that's not where im even having the issue. Anyways this post is more about trying to find opinions on the newer processors. Also 4k pushes the limit of the 4790 processing power which will slow it down as well.

Actually look at these benchmarks. You'll see that it really only makes a 12% difference between the two cpus. So while yes, you will get a performance boost, it won't be worth your money to get that small difference, especially since you have to upgrade all your other parts too. I say oc the crap out of your cpu and/or get a better gpu.

Not sure which benchmarks you looked at. Yes the 4790k can hyper-thread to create 12 but it does not hold out the Ryzen or a gen8 I7 at all. there is a significant difference between the 8gen and the 4gen. Yes single core is only a 12% difference but no one uses single core much anymore while editing or rendering. Like i said before i am looking for an opinion between the NEW processors not about keeping my current one.

Thats where im torn. The Ryzen at the same price is 8core. but i lose greatly on single core.

This is true. its only a 20 dollar difference. Any thoughts on the memory or the case?
