NVIDIA graphics and horrible performance?

Hi
My laptop is using an NVIDIA 840M. I'm getting horrible frames everywhere. Maybe 3 fps on low. I updated drivers, check the temp (mid 60 C) and even reset my PC. I also made sure that my games are using NVIDIA through the NVIDIA control panel. Still horrible frames. Any ideas on what to do?
Thanks

Solution
I don't see any thermal or core issues on those screen shots of the CPU sensor readings. So I don't THINK the CPU is the problem.

Now download Furmark and do the same shots of the GPU sensors at idle and again while running a GPU torture test in Furmark so that I know that the GPU should be at 100% load and lets see what shakes out.

Thanks for your reply
I tried that already. Still nothing...

Well, that's a really low end card, but even so you should be doing better than 3fps on low settings regardless of resolution. If you've done a CLEAN GPU card driver installation, and I don't mean installing the latest version over the top of the older version because that never resolves anything, then it's either got to be the fact that it IS NOT running on the Nvidia adapter regardless of what you are seeing in the Nvidia control panel, or you have a problem with the hardware. Gaming hardware does not typically have a long life in laptops.

The inherent nature of the hardware to begin failing due to heat issues is not only common but almost inevitable. You can't stuff that kind of high tdp hardware into a confined space with very little cooling and expect it to have a long life running CPU and GPU intensive games on high or ultra settings like you would if it were a desktop with good cooling.

I'm not saying YOU necessarily did that, but it's not uncommon nor would it be unreasonable to assume that SOMEBODY did.

Have you tried running Furmark or another stability test to see if it can even run it? Are you only having this problem with one specific game or across all titles?

Have you tried reinstalling the entire operating system, hardware drivers and then reinstalling the games to see if it was an OS problem?

Thanks for the reply again.
I used to be able to get around 50 frames on Rocket League on low, but now its down to 5. I have infact clean installed the whole OS but to no avail. I clean installed pretty much anything I could at this point. I understand it may be a hardware problem, but in that case why is the GPU still recognized and functioning? If it were to die by heat it windows shouldnt display it in the device manager nor should the games I play recognize it. And yes, every game is suffering. I'll run 3D mark though. Any ideas?
Thanks again!

Also might I add that after disabling my Intel graphics, my game still ran at a poor framerate. This must mean that it isnt a problem taht my games arent running NVIDIA graphics, but a problem with the graphics itself

Have you bothered to look at what the CPU and GPU temps are up to? Sounds to me a WHOLE lot like either the graphics card or CPU are being thermal throttled. Not uncommon in a laptop. In fact, this is probably the MOST likely reason considering you've already addressed the common software related possibilities.

Download and install HWinfo. (NOT HWmonitor or any other monitoring software that may have come with your hardware.) Run "Sensors only".

Scroll down to the CPU core temperatures and GPU core temperature and familiarize yourself with the software enough to see what it is doing at idle. Now, take a screenshot of the CPU and GPU temperatures at idle.

Now fire up a game and look at the same temperatures again after a few minutes. Take screenshots again. Post them here so I can see them for comparison. I'll bet thermals are the issue. I'd bet something is being throttled to keep temps down.

After https://imgur.com/DdrsHFs running Rocket League for 10 minutes
Before https://imgur.com/a/MNJdW

This kind of makes sense becuase I have my laptop on a cooling stand and its winter so my room is pretty chilly. But doesn't explain why the gpu is so bad
Thanks again

You're GPU is bad or damaged, or something. If you look at your screenshots the GPU shows zero core clock speed at idle and a maximum of 135mhz at "idle".

Then, running Rocket league, it still shows a maximum of 135mhz core clock speed BUT the memory clock speed jumps from 405mhz to 900mhz, showing that it IS attempting to increase performance but is not doing so based on core clock speed. Maybe you just snapped an image at the wrong time, I don't know. Temps do not show an average or maximum that are consistent with a GPU that is running at normal levels.

Your GPU should never be at zero celcius when it's running, ever, so that's wrong.

Please download and run Furmark and do the same thing again, before and after, with the screenshots while running the Furmark stress test.

Also, please do the same before and after shots of the CPU either running Furmark or Rocket league, so I can see what the CPU core speeds and temperatures are doing as well.
