Graphics card feels very weak.

Hello, new member here. I recently bought this from best buy.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-ultra-desktop-amd-ryzen-5-1400-8gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-580-1tb-hard-drive-black/5833100.p?skuId=5833100

My problem is that upon first using the computer it felt very slow and so I checked the disk usage and it was at 99-100% for a min or two. It eventually went away so I went ahead and downloaded Destiny 2. Upon launching the game, the settings were all set to high so I figured my graphics card could and should be able to handle it. It was using 1.3gb out of the 4 so I thought it should be fine. Entering the game however, I was constantly at 30-45 fps. I lowered the graphics just to see if anything changed putting most settings to low/lowest. Entering the game after restarting, I was barely hovering 60 fps (no vsync/alias) and dropping to 50 constantly. This PC should be able to handle Destiny 2 and high settings right? My resolution is 1366x678.

I'm not sure if I had screwed up something inside the case when I was taking out the protective foam that was inside or what. I also remember my very first time booting it up my dog tripped the power cable (not sure if I didn't push it in deep enough or what but it was very loose). At that point I had not even gone past the windows 10 installing screen so I'm leaning towards this as the main problem. Where should I first start; should I just reinstall windows 10 and see if the problem persists? Where should I go from there?

Solution
Your specs should run Destiny 2 ultra 1080p 60 fps easily. Make sure you update BIOS and mobo chipset drivers, Ryzen needs this very much. It's most likely the PC driver isn't up to date seeing as it's a prebuilt.
Sorry but going to 1080p won't increase your fps, a cpu bottleneck doesn't work like that and is a common mistake people make. If the cpu was the bottleneck you will get the similar fps at 1080p as your fps would be dictated by the cpu and not gpu. Changing resolution makes little impact on cpu usage, hence why lowering resolution is used as a test for determining a cpu bottleneck if the fps stay about the same.

Yeah, OK....

That GPU usage isn't near 98%, likely very low around 65%........ And CPU usage is at or near 100% at that low resolution.

Classic Bottleneck.

And yeah that is how it works.

Tried to bottleneck my I7 7700K and GTX 1080 running at 640x480.... Didn't work, system is too balanced, both CPU and GPU at around 30% usage.

Have to do it on my other machine.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I forgot to mention my gpu drivers are up to date. Havent checked for mobos drivers so I will do that. Anyways, upon booting up, during start up the disk usage is sometimes 99% and goes away after a minute or two. Is that normal for this hdd?

It's perfectly normal for disk usage to that high when booting....booting isn't finished just because you can see the desktop, there are still a lot of files that need to be opened as part of the normal booting processes. So, for the first minute or two you would expect to see both the disk and CPU usage to be high.

I see, thanks for confirming Pete, guess I've just been too accustomed to my other pc which has an ssd. Also, to you or anyone else that reads this, my spec should be able to run Destiny 2 a high no problem right? Just seems weird as my other PC which has a 750 ti can run 60 fps most of the time on lowest settings no problem. Not too sure as to why I'm getting sub 60 on this rig. I will update mobo and gpu drivers and mess with the ingame resolution to see if I get better frames at high/low settings.

Now read my post again, the point is if you have a CPU bottleneck at low resolution giving low fps and you increase the resolution you will not get higher fps. If your CPU can only manage 30fps @ 720p its only going to deliver similar fps at 1080p/1440p/4k as the CPU is the limiting factor and resolution makes little difference to CPU load. By increasing the resolution you do not decrease the CPU load, you are only increasing the gpu load and if you increase it far enough both components run at near 100% usage.

What actual speed (GHz) is your CPU running at while gaming? Your fps definitely should be much higher and if your hitting 100% CPU it could be your CPU is throttling for some reason.

Hang just a thought, when at Windows desktop? What is your CPU usage, if you have only just finished installing Windows it may be doing loads of updates in the background hogging CPU resources?

I actually got it to work on my other machine, i7 870 with a RX 480.

Had to turn it into a i3/Pentium though.

CPU was 98% and GPU was 17%... At 640x480.

However dropping the Resolution to what the OP is running drops the GPU usage down to like 60%, that's with the i7 870 running all 8 threads.

It's only when the resolution was set at 1080P the GPU was at the 98% - 100% usage. That's i7 870 and RX 480.... Anything below that and the GPU usage drops dramatically.

And? I haven't disputed what a CPU bottleneck is, what I am disputing is raising the resolution can increase fps when at the lower resolution a CPU bottleneck is present, because it cannot.

When did I say it would raise the FPS?

I never said that.

What I said was he needed to get a 1080P monitor for that GPU because it's not utilizing it running at that low res.

So it's really hard to tell what the heck is going on in the 1st place if the GPU is only around 60%.

Anyhow it was fun running those tests, haven't done that in awhile, since the Core 2 Duo days. Had to really kill the I7's though to get the performance down.

No, its a massive clue that the problem lies with cpu usage and we can take a look at that, hence my earlier post

Ah, missed that one.

We were talking about the same thing, just in different ways.

However if he is still running at that low res it will be interesting to see what happens with the GPU running around 60%.

Hello guys, thanks for the replies again. I reinstalled windows via USB and just tried Witcher 3 at 1366x768. Most settings are on high and I can play at a constant 60 fps. Thanks again everyone! :D Will see if I can run Destiny 2 at high or not. Thanks again for everyone's replies and suggestions/help.
