First off, the specs:
CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0 GHz
Mobo: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
RAM: GSkill Ripjaws X 16GB DDR3-1866
Hard Drive: Kingston 240GB SSD
GPU: Asus Radeon R9 380 4GB
PSU: Corsair CXM 750W
Windows 10 Pro
I had a buddy give me some memory the other day and I'm considering adding it to my system. I already checked it out in his build, and it works. It is Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz. The current memory I have is 16GB (2x8GB) GSkill Ripjaws DDR3 1866 MHz.
In the old days, adding memory was the go-to for increasing speed and responsiveness of a computer. It didn't matter about the speed, latency, etc., as long as the chip fit in the slot, it worked. Now, you have to worry about things like memory speed, voltage, and timing.
My question is two parts: first, should I even consider adding the memory to my system? And if so, can different memory run at different clock speeds on the same board? For example: if I have my GSkill run at 1866, and I have the Corsair run at 1600, or do all 4 sticks have to run at the same speed?
Thanks for reading/answering guys!
