Hey everyone!

I'm looking to build a pc for 144hz gaming at 1440p, and i'm getting the a gtx 1080 for it, but i'm having a hard time deciding which cpu to get.
I'm considering an I5-7600k or an I7-7700 (with no K), but i leaning more towards the I7 as i have never overclocked a cpu before, so i'm trying to avoid it.

4 core is still fine for gaming, games are lousy with taking advantage of multicore, if you want to stream and play games then more cores the better.

The new i5 8600 does perform on par with the 7700k and beats it in some games where as the 7700k will beat it in others. I would go with the new 8th gen purely for upgradibility down the line, however it does require a different mobo for the 1151 (300) series socket.

You could also go with a AMD Ryzen 5 or 7.

Gaming is more about clock speed then anything else.

Agree most games don't use more than 4 threads but in the last couple of years that is changing slowly. Just have a look at Toms 8600k reviews, it shows both games benefitting from and not benefitting from extra threads. Here are some that do

Its fairly well known that 4 core i5's struggle to hold 60fps in multiplayer BF1 but fair unbiased benchmarks are nearly impossible in multiplayer scenarios. As the OP is aiming for high fps for 144Hz monitor I wouldn't go with a 4 core i5. For high fps Coffee Lake has the best performance, just check the reviews.
