Is it worth upgrading from a 970 to a 1070? I want more fps in games like Destiny 2 and Escape From Tarkov. I have a 144hz 1080p monitor. Would i see a big difference if i upgraded? If so, what version of the 1070 would be best?

Depends on what you're paying for the 1070. I play regularly at a weekly LAN party and 2 of the several systems have i5s, one has a 1070 and one has a 970. Both perform similarly in older games, as they aren't taxing, but when playing newer games, the 1070 has a clear advantage at 1080p. It gets smaller if you increase the resolution, but with your 144hz monitor and assuming you have G-Sync, a 1070 will be anywhere from 30-50% faster in certain games and look smoother.

The real question is how much you have to pay for it, because of high prices, it might be worth it to wait for a deal to come around or some kind of promotion, as the 970 can still handle modern titles by dropping a setting or two from ultra to high.

Well, prices are still inflated from miners buying up gaming cards, so I personally wouldn't buy one for $400. That said, if your budget is around $400, then I would probably suggest the EVGA FTW 3.0 from amazon. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Pshj4D/evga-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-ftw-gaming-acx-30-video-card-08g-p4-6276-kr

My entire PC is EVGA. A lot of people dislike them because some of their products are overpriced, but the GPUs from them are solid and competitively priced (unless you want KINGPIN level of cards). Their customer support is pretty good and they have long warranties (10 years on my PSU from them).

I did exactly this last month because I got an amazing deal on a used card.
After buying the 1070 and selling my 970, the whole upgrade cost me $140.

The performance is way better in demanding games (Like Just Cause 3 & Wolfenstein) and a 1070 is much more power efficient than a 970. Mainly the performance advantage is due to the 8GB of video memory (vs 3.5). Games that maxed out the 970's VRAM have plenty of room on a 1070. Even though the card I got is an MSI Aero with a reference blower cooler, temperatures are not a problem. The only thing I did was slow down the fan because the blower got a bit loud under load. It's still plenty cool with the fan running slower than stock. In fact even though the boost clock is specified to be 1683 MHz it turbo boosts to over 1800, with a slower fan and I haven't touched overclocking.

Which GTX 1070 to buy?
Pick the one that looks cool, the performance doesn't matter.
