Building a PC for a friend. She wants to be able to play at or above 100 frames per second at medium to max settings. Title as stated, should I get a 8700k with a 1080 or a 1080 Ti with the R7 1700 (OC) for gaming at 100-144hz at 1440p? She'll be playing AAA titles/MMORPGs.

The 8700k beats the 1700 at pretty much everything. Even if you overclock the 1700 to 4.0ghz, you can overclock the 8700k to 5ghz easy and destroy all the 1700 benchmarks. Personally I would go with the 8700k and a 1070ti, which can be overclocked to near 1080 speeds.
