Hey guys so I have currently an i5 4570 and a GTX 770, the 770 is definitely showing its age at this point so i have been thinking of upgrading to a 1070.

However I am wondering if the 1070 would be a waste of money for 1080p @60hz ultra settings with my current setup or should I just get a 1060?

I could also get the 1070 and upgrade to a 4790 in the upcoming months however I have seen this i7 still also causes some bottlenecking.

What do you guys think I should do?

Cheers! :)

You'd be fine with the 1070, you could also utilize Nvidia DSR which allows the system to render the game at a higher resolution then scale it back to your monitors resolution which would shift the load more onto the GPU. As for the 4790(k) it would easily be fine with a much faster GPU, I have a (currently) stock 4770K with a 1080 ti @1080P/144hz and no bottleneck and depending on the game some I run at 2K/4K.

Get the 1070. With a faster card, you can run all the games at Ultra settings instead of High or Medium. AND more future proof.

Well its wrong. The 1060 6gb is a HUGE upgrade over the 770. I used to have a 680 which I flashed into 770 specs and overclocked, performed the same as a overclocked 770. The 1060 6gb was massively faster.
