Ethernet suddenly isn't even registered on my laptop

I'm not sure what computer spec info I would need to provide just yet, other than the fact I have the W10 OS, but the deal is, my laptop accepted an Ethernet connection just fine until it had a little freak out and the screen went black. I don’t know why. It also kept booting itself when I turned it off, but to a black screen, so I left it a while, and when I went back to it, it was on and scanning the C drive, and hasn't been an issue since. It asks to scan the C drive every time I boot it up, though, and has been for a little while, so I’m unsure if that’s part of the issue. It accepted Ethernet perfectly well pre-screen issue though, regardless of asking to scan the C drive. Online advice suggests seeking the Ethernet info in the Device Manager and disabling it, but I don’t even have that there from what I can tell. Any thoughts/queries about spec/more details? It’s a real pain in the butt having awful or no internet upstairs. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like your hard drive is more of an issue at present.

Try opening command prompt - Click start button and type CMD, then right click on the search result of CMD and "run as administrator"
Type: sfc /scannow , then press enter.

Let this run, and it should check for any Windows system corruption and hopefully repair it.

If the issues continue, you should back up any important data and try reformatting your system. The hard drive might be on its way out.

Unfortunately it picked up no issues.

Another consideration, though, after some searching with a friend I have found that, in Network Adapters in Device Manager, the Realtek PCle GBE Family Controller isn't working, and gives me the following error message:

'Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.'

Apparently this is to do with Ethernet, and there is an option to download a driver from the Realtek website, however I am generally reluctant to uninstall things I'm not sure of from my laptop really. If you have any insight on this, might I have your thoughts?

A reformat would hopefully be a very last option.
