Did I make a mistake?

I just built a new computer and put in the i7 7700k. But now I'm hearing about the i5 8700k being better then my cpu. I got my i7 for 289.99 so I couldn't really pass that up. But did I make a mistake? Is there a significant difference? I mean I know better stuff comes out pretty much all the time but if there's a significant difference between this i7 and others then I'm gonna try to return it.

I play games like codww2, bf1, Rome 2, and my biggest one is I have an HTC vive.

So my specs are

i7 7700k
16GB ram
H100i cpu cooler
Msi gtx 1080 8GB duke
500 GB SSD
Msi z270 A-PRO motherboard

Its not really better. For alot of apps yeah the more cores help but for gaming is debatable, yes there are some games that use the i5 better but for most they offer the same performance or the 7700 has a slight edge. Everyone says cores cores cores because the next gen of games that will use them is coming, but Ive been hearing that since the Core 2 Duo days so Im not going to hold my breath. Maybe in a few years we will see games take advantage of more cores but itll be a few more before they take advantage of them well.

No i meant a 7700k. I did not know they were different and I would of needed different mobos. I guess that answers that question.

Nah I just game and watch movies. I figured it wasnt much of a difference but someone was all like "wah why did you get the 7700k" but i guess its just a matter of opinion at that point.
The only thing im concerned with is that my CPU got up to 72 C when playing codww2 for a few hours. I dont know if it stayed there or just bounced up there because it was on HW monitor and was just on the MAX tab.

Yeah I am excited. I was playing codww2 and my FPS was dropping from like 70fps to 35 real quick. My gpu usage was at 98%. I was like "Order button"
