I'm using a asus maximus 8 hero motherboard, and a i5 7600k cpu I'm overclocked to 4.7ghz at 1.18 volts if I want to overclock to 4.8ghz what should I set the voltage to? or leave it where its at now?

Solution
Then I would stay where you are. Anything further is just pushing the envelope too much except for kicks or unless you plan to replace it within a two year period anyhow.

ok thanks

Since that extra 100MHz only gives a theoretical 2% boost which won't even be noticeable I would QUIT trying to go further.

CPU's like all electronic chips DEGRADE over time. The closer you push it to the limit, the sooner the system will become unstable.

It can also create temporary overheating issues which can end up causing periodic stuttering due to SPIKES at times. Your CPU cores may show say 80degC when testing but one or more cores may periodically hit 100degC or so causing the protection circuit to temporarily kick in.

INTEL has discussed this and the main reason is their using solder as TIM, but the fact remains it is an issue for this generation of CPU's though how much an issue depends on the silicon lottery and your cooler.

Long story short is I'd stop at 4.7GHz.

I hit the silicon lottery my temps are 30c idle and 54c load

Must have a very good cooler then.

I'd still quit where you are at though. That's based on a lot of experience with instabilities creeping into systems over time due to pushing to the limit (it's not just temperature that is an issue).

ok, ill stop at 4.7ghz

Do you have a link to something that verifies that? You may be right, but I haven't read anything like that and I've just spent the last two days reading just about everything I could find on Coffee lake due to a potentially major VRM issue that I've been discussing with some other mods and staffers. I know this isn't a CL chip you're discussing, but I'd still like to read that if you have a link?

should I keep increasing?

I wouldn't. If you want your CPU to have a LONG life, then I would not push any AMD or Intel CPU from the last fifteen years past 4.5Ghz on a permanent basis. Exactly as Photonboy has explained, you WILL degrade the CPU at a much faster rate than was intended by doing so. If you are stable and temperatures are within the acceptable envelope, then I would either stay where you are or even drop down to 4.5-4.6Ghz for the sake of longevity.

stability and temps are very good. temps are 30c idle and 55c load. I'm using a corsair h60 liquid cooler.
