I want to upgrade my cpu:

i5 6500 to an i7 7700k

I have an msi H110M gaming motherboard.

now i understand the socket is the same, but is there anything else that will prevent me from doing this? i don't want to re-install windows, will I have to?

thanks guys :)

Getting a GTX 1080Ti? Sure you might want to upgrade. No need to upgrade CPU if you have anything lower than GTX 1070

1| You're going to need a BIOS update while on the Skylake processor part in order to drop in the Kabylake processor part.

2| It's actually pointless dropping a Skylake/Kabylake i7 K suffix processor in a board that has zero capability to take advantage of the i7's overclocking potential. You should be looking at a Z270 board logically.

3| You're also going to need aftermarket cooling.

You don't list your Skylake motherboard's actual model. Often it requires a BIOS update with a Skylake chip to work with an upgraded Kaby Lake chip. You'll have to look on your motherboard's support website to find that info out. If you have Windows 10 that is assigned to a Microsoft account, you will not need to worry about the hardware upgrade. It may, or may not trigger a reactivation of it. I'm not sure as I've never just changed a CPU with Win10.

is it really 100% pointless? wouldn't the upgrade be worth it anyways if i got a z motherboard in the near future?

No. Still higher clock speed than the locked 7700 by a fairly significant margin. Up to you if you want to buy the Z-board later on.
